We wanted to take to the kids to Shenandoah as the leaves are starting to change, but it was a 45 minute delay to get into the park and onto Skyline Drive (which I’m sure would have been a 5 mph parade). Every overlook and trailhead was probably full. So we bailed, and picked a trail randomly off google maps, and ended up on part of the Appalachian trail heading to Trumbo Hollow.

It was great! Kids loved it, leaves were just shy of peak.

Drove past a local county airport, which would have been great for the Oppo hunt.

Earlier this week we took the kids out to pizza at the one place that does a good enough job at being gluten free for my daughter. Caught this rainbow on the way there.

Then parked in a garage and watched the sunset while we are, which was way too orange for way too long. Guess some of that smoke from out west is making it’s way to the east coast.

These are awesome! I just posted my morning walk photos within 1 minute of this showing up. The sunset in the parking garage took me a minute to process, but it’s quite awesome.

You beat me to it by seconds. Coincidences like this are fun!

Are you in the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia for those not from around here ) ? I’m starting to ID some other folks in the area and hope to one day have an Oppo meetup or something when it’s safe to do so.

Looks amazing!

I’m super-jealous, we normally have pretty good colors here in Missouri but it’s barely rained all later summer and fall so they’re mostly just yellowing and falling off.  No real spectacular colors this year.

That’s gorgeous. I grew up in Norfolk, went to school at JMU, and I really miss those mountains. My dad was an AT section hiker, and I and my brother accompanied him on a few hikes. Digging that F-86. What airport is that?

As the kids get older I’d love to tackle some of the AT in some seriousness. Maybe set of a goal of all of Virginia, maybe.

Airport is Warren County airport. Grass runway, I think? Just a detour to avoid the traffic for the park and Hey, look at that!

The through hikers make a big deal out of doing the entirety of MD in one day, albeit a long one. Most of the sections I hiked were in VA. I couldn’t tell you where, though. The only place I really remember is a mountain called The Priest.

As a baby Oppo I’ve never been, but I’m super interested in checking it out when it’s safe to do so.

I live in DC right near RFK, there’s acres of parking lots there that could be used for a car meetup.

Yeah, rfk is empty for now. Katie’s is great. I’ve heard they’re up and running, but I’m not going anytime soon. When they’re up for good, you gotta go early. Like, 7am early, show is done by 9, good stuff gone long before that. They don’t like riffraff, so they do it  early to keep out idiots.

I also autocross with wdcr-scca at FedEx field, again not this year. Next year hopefully. But plenty of chances to get us all together

The early start time works for me. I often find myself waking up at 6am on Saturday with nothing to do, sounds like I could go to cars & coffee and be home before anyone else in my house was awake.

I seem to recall that it was a fairly easy grade up, but pretty steep coming down. Of course, that would be different going the opposite direction. We did the easier way up. That was also about 40 years ago.
